ABSTRACT
This study analyses the degradation process of press-in connections operating under cyclic loading conditions, with particular emphasis on fretting wear. The aim of research was to identify the factors initiating damage and assess its influence on the service life of the connections. Experimental investigations conducted on shaft-sleeve models subjected to rotational bending revealed significant changes in the tribological properties within the contact zone, including an increase in the press-out force and the contact pressure and degradation of surface topography. A heterogeneous nature of fretting wear was observed, along with the presence of wear products in the form of iron oxides. It was found that fretting leads to the initiation of microcracks and a reduction in fatigue strength. The obtained results correspond to operational conditions similar to those encountered in rail vehicle wheel sets.
