Redundant Systems Shutdown During Low Capacity Operation

Two possible operation modes of various pumps with redundancy in electric power generating units during low load periods (night) were analyzed. The first mode - two of three pumps work at night with 25% of nominal capacity, the third pump is a cold (passive) reserve. The second mode - one pump works at night with 50% of nominal capacity, two pumps are in cold reserve. A Markov reward model was built for the comparison analysis of these possible operation modes. The model takes into account all important factors - pumps power consumption, pumps failure rate, pumps starting availability, cost of alternative energy, and penalty cost of energy not supplied. It was shown that under current operation conditions the second operation mode is more effective one.

Optymalizacja niezawodności systemu: metoda rozmytego algorytmu genetycznego do optymalizacji wielokryterialnej

System reliability optimization: A fuzzy multi-objective genetic algorithm approach

System reliability optimization is often faced with imprecise and conflicting goals such as reducing the cost of the system and improving the reliability of the system. The decision making process becomes fuzzy and multi-objective. In this paper, we formulate the problem as a fuzzy multi-objective nonlinear program. A fuzzy multi-objective genetic algorithm approach (FMGA) is proposed for solving the multi-objective decision problem in order to handle the fuzzy goals and constraints. The approach is able flexible and adaptable, allowing for intermediate solutions, leading to high quality solutions. Thus, the approach incorporates the preferences of the decision maker concerning the cost and reliability goals through the use of fuzzy numbers. The utility of the approach is demonstrated on benchmark problems in the literature. Computational results show that the FMGA approach is promising.

Metoda podwyższania niezawodności i bezpieczeństwa procesów poprzez stosowanie układów regulacji tolerujących uszkodzenia

Method of increasing the reliability and safety of the processes through the use of fault tolerant control systems

The operation idea of fault tolerant control systems, has been presented in the paper. Protection and security layers applied in technical diagnostics associated with safety of control system, have been discussed. The automatic control system of a steam turbine power, has been described as an example of fault tolerant control system. A steam turbine is the main element of energy blocs forming a national energy system. Therefore, the turbine control systems require high reliability. The impact of diagnostics and fault tolerance on the values of reliability and safety coefficients of control systems, have been determined in the paper.

A method for evaluating and upgrading systems with parallel structures with forced redundancy

The objects of the study are parallel-structure machine systems with redundancy associated with safety assurance of continuous material flow. The problem concerns systems in which the supply of materials takes place continuously (24 hours a day), and the system of operated machines must ensure the receipt and movement of the material at a strictly defined time and in the desired quantity. It is a system where the presence of a failure poses a threat to human life and environmental degradation. This paper presents a method for system condition assessment and upgrading for maintaining proper operation under conditions of continuous operation. A database of information about the current parameters of the system components (measurements, monitoring) is necessary for condition assessment. The method also uses lean techniques (including TPM). System evaluation and selection criteria for a suitable structure in terms of further operation were proposed. Exemplification was performed for an underground mine drainage system. As a part of the identification, selected parameters of the system components were measured, and their characteristics (motors, pumps, pipelines) were developed. The results of the analysis and the values of the adopted criteria were compared to the indicators for new pump sets. A two-option system upgrade was proposed, in addition to machine operating schedules, maintenance periods, and overhaul cycles.
